This weeks episode jumps back a little and honestly, it felt slightly odd at first. We go all the way back to Negan returning with Eugene. It wasn’t that much of a surprise because we tended to catch up with the main sides and we haven’t seen the Saviors camp since episode 7 so at some point, we were going to have to return to them. However, it did take some getting used to knowing we had back-tracked a little.

Saying that, I never thought an episode that focused so much on Eugene would be that interesting, but it really was. For this episode we mostly focus on him and Dwight. So I’m going to split this review into two and talk about each of them.

First, let’s talk about Eugene. He handled the entire situation surprisingly well considering everything. It’ll be interesting to see how he handles the rest of his stay. He’s clearly frightened of Negan and what he, along with the Saviors, could do to him if he steps out of line. I don’t think he’s going to stay safe for very long, but for now Negan seems to be a pretty big fan of him, and Dwight seems to be okay with him too. So far Eugene seems to have settled in surprisingly well, most likely because he can lie pretty good and he’s all but willing to play along if it means surviving.

The thing I appreciated the most about his scenes were his interactions with Negan’s wives. He was completely and utterly himself, but it showed a lighter, softer side to the Saviors camp and reaffirms that idea that they’re not all bad, some of them really don’t have a choice.

Also that jar of pickles he kept carrying around, that addition was great too.

Now onto Dwight. I never quite know what to think about him. We’ve had an episode before that focused on him quite a lot and still, I’m unsure. I did feel sorry for him again this episode, and it’s clear he’s torn up. Even getting the Doctor killed was something I could understand, but although he seems to be protecting others and is clearly struggling when it comes down to what to do. He doesn’t seem to be even trying to get away from Negan, instead, he’s making the most of a bad situation.

I get that, but I hope it changes. Hopefully that last shot of him and Eugene is a suggestion that these two (and maybe Negan’s wives) will team up and escape together. It would be nice, because then the others will have inside information on the Savior’s camp, and just on the Saviors in general.

Like I said before, this episode was surprisingly good considering we did back-track a little and it was primarily about Eugene (and Dwight). Everything so far seems to be building up to a dramatic end for the season, so it’ll be interesting to see what kind of routes we go on from here. Especially considering there aren’t many episodes left.
