Talk to Me (2023) | Movie Review

“I let you in.”

I can certainly see why this movie was so talked about when it first came out (and to an extent, it still is now) and I can also understand why I kept seeing so much praise for it.

The plot is kind of ridiculous or at least it starts out that way. A bunch of teenagers create a new party game in which an embalmed hand is used to conjure spirits in order to create a new kind of high. Like with any horror movie, this eventually goes too far with some pretty extreme consequences.

From this point on, there will be spoilers to some degree, if you have any interest in seeing this movie please do! It’s an interesting little watch but for those of you who have already seen it (or don’t care about spoilers), feel free to read on.

Haunted Mansion (2023) | Movie Review [Spoiler Free]

“This place is haunted!”

2023’s Haunted Mansion may be the second adaption of the Disney theme park ride of the same name but it is its own movie and bears no connection to 2003’s The Haunted Mansion other than the fact they’re both inspired by the same thing. This means that you don’t have to be familiar with the original to watch this new story.

Gunpowder Milkshake (2021) | Movie Review [Spoiler Free]

[Header: Karen Gillan as Sam, Lena Headey as Scarlet, and Chloe Coleman as Emily | Netflix, StudioCanal]

“It was so nice to have a kid in the library again.”

From the moment this movie dropped its first trailer, I could tell it was going to be an absolute blast and I’m so happy to say that I was right.

The casting for this is superb! Front and centre we have Karen Gillan as Sam, an assassin who has to go against orders so she can protect 8-year-old Emily (Chloe Coleman). Along the way she gets help from her mother, Scarlet (Lena Headey), and three other assassins: Florence (Michelle Yeoh), Madeleine (Carla Gugino), and Anna May (Angela Bassett). All of these women are incredible and are so good to watch. The characters are fun and interesting in their own but there’s also great chemistry throughout the whole group, no matter who is sharing a scene.

Buddy Daddies Review [Spoiler Free]

[Header: Tokyo MX, GYT, GTV, BS11, ABC, Mētele]

I happened to see a clip of the scene pictured below and instantly knew I had to watch this. It hadn’t been that long since I finished Spy x Family and I was looking for something to fill what I was missing from that show and Buddy Daddies felt like the right thing to do just that.

I’m glad to say that I was right. This show was an absolute blast. For those who are maybe unaware, it follows two assassins: Kazuki and Rei who become the unintentional guardians of a four-year-old girl called Miri.

XO, Kitty Season 1 Review

[Header: Choi Min-young as Dae-heon Kim and Anna Cathcart as Katherine “Kitty” Song Covey | Netflix]

May contain very, very mild spoilers.

I had no idea this show was going to be a thing until maybe a couple of weeks before it dropped on Netflix but the second I did find out about it, I was excited. I loved both the film adaptation and books of the ‘To All the Boys’ series. Both versions were very fun and enjoyable and I ended up loving the character Kitty in both so to find out she got her own show was really exciting.

This particular instalment to the franchise follows Kitty (Anna Cathcart) who moves to South Korea to attend a new school in the hopes of feeling closer to her mother but also to reconnect with her boyfriend Dae (Choi Min-young).

Now, is XO, Kitty the best thing to come out of this franchise? No, but it’s still wonderful. A key thing is to not take it too seriously. There is a decent amount of drama with some quite emotional parts throughout but this is very much a fun, comedy show with episodes that are only (on average) 30 minutes long. If you’ve seen the films and/or read the books, you’ll already be prepared for the kind of plot and tropes explored in this.
